Efficacious nonhormonal alternatives for management of menopausal vasomotor symptoms continue to be a goal for women and clinicians alike. To further explore the short- and long-term efficacy and safety of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor desvenlafaxine in this setting, researchers conducted an industry-funded, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial at 122 sites in the U.S. and Canada. Participants were postmenopausal women aged ≥45 who experienced ≥7 moderate-to-severe hot flashes daily. The women were randomized to 100-mg desvenlafaxine or placebo daily and kept diaries to record number and severity of hot flashes.
