Understanding the HIV and syphilis epidemics among men who have sex with men (MSM) worldwide is critical for designing more-effective control strategies. But discrimination against MSM, suboptimal MSM-friendly clinical services, and infrequent disclosure of sexual identity come together to obscure the MSM HIV/syphilis epidemics in China, as well as in many other regions worldwide. Previous epidemiology studies of sexual health in Chinese MSM have generally been small, underpowered, and focused on a single region, thus limiting their generalizability.
