Although effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been demonstrated, few studies have examined psychodynamic psychotherapy's efficacy for this highly prevalent condition. Researchers in Germany directly compared these two psychotherapies and a wait-list control in a five-site, randomized study involving 495 nonmedicated SAD patients.
Manual-based CBT employed role playing, promoted external focus of attention, and used videofeedback, among other features.
