Screening and surveillance colonoscopy intervals generally assume an adequate bowel preparation at the last examination. In clinical practice, bowel preparations that are designated as either fair or poor quality are often also assumed to be inadequate and to require interval shortening. To examine the effect of fair bowel preparation quality on interval colonoscopy recommendations, investigators conducted a retrospective review of 16,251 colonoscopy records during a 2-year period.
Of 1943 patients who underwent a colonoscopy for an indication of “average risk” or “screening,” 619 (32%) had fair bowel preparation. This group received the following recommendations for screening or repeat colonoscopy intervals:
