Licensure of heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in 2000 has lead to significant reductions in the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in both the target vaccine group (age <5 years) as well as in older unvaccinated children and adults. In 2010, PCV13 replaced PCV7, providing protection against 6 additional serotypes.
