Multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) accounts for about 1% of newly diagnosed TB cases in the U.S., but what proportion of MDR-TB cases is attributable to transmission within the country? To find out, investigators carried out a cross-sectional study involving verified cases of MDR-TB from eight states (California, Texas, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, and Washington) between 2007 and 2009.
Among 268 cases of MDR-TB in the U.S. during the study period, 168 were reported from these eight states. In-depth interviews were completed with the 92 individuals who consented. Cases were categorized based on genotyping and epidemiological links.
