HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) comprises three diagnoses divided by severity of impairment: asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI), mild neurocognitive disease (MND), and HIV-associated dementia (HAD). All three conditions are characterized by impaired performance on neuropsychological testing. Only MND and HAD involve functional impairment, which is determined by subjective reports.
In a recent pilot study involving 24 HIV-infected individuals aged >60, researchers evaluated differences between subjective and objective performance on functional testing.
