Studies of cognition in individuals with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) have yielded inconsistent results. However, in children and adults 70 years or older, SDB has been associated with cognitive deficits, but only in carriers of APOE4, the high-risk allele for Alzheimer disease. In the current study, investigators examined SDB, APOE genotype, and cognitive function in 755 middle-aged adults participating in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study, a prospective, epidemiologic study of SDB in randomly selected, community-dwelling state employees.
