Colon cancer is a disease of the elderly, and prior studies have indicated that adjuvant therapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) provides a similar survival benefit in both younger and older patients. Standard therapy for stage III colon cancer now combines treatment with an oral or intravenous (IV) fluorinated pyrimidine and oxaliplatin for 6 months.
To evaluate the impact of age on the effectiveness of newer adjuvant therapies, including oral fluorinated pyrimidines and oxaliplatin, investigators evaluated data on more than 14,500 patients with stage II or III colon cancer (2500 were ≥70 and 12,000 were <70) obtained from the ACCENT database.
