Although WHO guidelines for active management of the third stage of labor include uterine massage, the efficacy of this intervention is not known. In a randomized, controlled trial at four university hospitals in China, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of sustained transabdominal uterine massage in reducing blood loss after vaginal birth. More than 2300 eligible participants were randomized to 10 U intramuscular oxytocin (given immediately after delivery of the shoulder) with or without 30 minutes of sustained transabdominal uterine massage (begun immediately after delivery of the placenta). Postpartum blood loss and need for additional measures to control bleeding were assessed.
