In 2006, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was recommended for routine vaccination of girls starting at ages 11 or 12 years. Currently available vaccines protect against the virus types responsible for the majority of cervical cancers (HPV types 16 and 18). The National Immunization Survey–Teen (NIS-Teen) monitors HPV vaccine coverage.
Vaccine uptake has consistently increased, from 25% in 2007 to 53% in 2011. However, vaccine coverage in 2012 remained stable at 54%, but would have reached 93% if the HPV vaccine had been administered at a healthcare visit when other vaccines were given.
