More than a half-century ago, researchers first described tumor of the follicular infundibulum (TFI), a benign follicular adnexal tumor. TFI usually is found as a solitary papule in the head and neck region of elderly patients and can sometimes be an incidental finding in basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), squamous cell carcinomas, seborrheic keratosis, and nevi. TFI shows differentiation comparable to that in the fetal follicular isthmus; therefore, the term isthmicoma has been proposed. Focal infundibulum differentiation is also noted.
