Tuberculosis (TB) is a massive problem in southern Africa, driven in part by the HIV epidemic. The estimated annual TB incidence in South Africa is >900 per 100,000 population (vs. 3.4/100,000 in the U.S. in 2011). In the ZAMSTAR (Zambia, South Africa Tuberculosis and AIDS Reduction) study — a community-randomized trial in Zambia and the Western Cape province of South Africa — researchers examined public health interventions designed to reduce the prevalence and transmission of TB by facilitating either rapid sputum diagnosis or integration of TB and HIV services in the community.
