Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is widely used in some countries to treat early gastric cancers (EGCs) that meet specific criteria. However, not all endoscopic procedures result in complete resection of the tumor. In such cases, optimal treatment is unclear.
To assess the natural history of EGC treated with ESD leaving positive margins, investigators in South Korea conducted a retrospective review of 335 lesions that had been treated with ESD in 304 patients. All patients received scheduled endoscopic follow-up after initial therapeutic ESD to identify recurrence.
