In September 2011, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment notified the CDC of a listeriosis outbreak, and cases were soon detected in other states. A nationwide investigation ensued and involved cases with laboratory isolation of any of the five outbreak-related subtypes of Listeria monocytogenes from specimens collected between August and October 2011.
A total of 147 cases were identified in 28 states. Eighty-six percent of the patients were aged ≥60. Of the 145 patients with hospitalization information available, 99% were hospitalized; overall, 33 patients (22%) died.
