With current HIV therapy, most patients in developed countries achieve virologic suppression and immune reconstitution. Although the risk for AIDS in those with high CD4-cell counts is low, it is not zero. Now, using data from 33 cohorts in Europe, researchers have assessed the incidence of AIDS-defining illnesses (ADIs) at CD4 counts ≥200 cells/mm3 beginning in 1998 — the start of the current HIV treatment era.
In all, 207,539 individuals aged ≥14 with baseline CD4 counts ≥200 cells/mm3 (median, 378) were included in the analysis. The largest risk category was men who have sex with men (40%), followed by women who acquired HIV through heterosexual contact (20%).
