Is Autism Linked with Induced or Augmented Childbirth?

This population-based study suggests an independent association.

Research on the causes of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has focused on genetic influences and interactions between genes and the environment. During childbirth, meconium aspiration and breech presentation are independent predictors of ASDs. Does induction or augmentation of labor increase risk for ASD?

In a population-based study, researchers linked detailed live birth records (1990–1998) with educational data (1987–2008) for 678,000 children in North Carolina. A diagnosis of autism in the educational records was defined as a clinical diagnosis and further evaluation by a school psychologist using standard individualized tests that assessed communication, social reciprocity, behavior, and sensory deficits.
