The etiology and features of interval cancers — those diagnosed after colonoscopy — are still poorly understood. To investigate this issue further, researchers conducted a population-based study of 5107 patients in the Netherlands diagnosed with colorectal cancer between 2001 and 2010. Of this group, 147 patients (2.9%) had interval cancers, which were diagnosed at an average of 26 months after the index colonoscopy. Causes of interval cancer were assigned based on the following criteria:
Inadequate examination: The cecum was not intubated, or bowel preparation was poor.
Inappropriate surveillance: The Dutch postpolypectomy surveillance guidelines were not followed.
