Curing adult onychomycosis usually requires oral antifungal therapy. Ciclopirox lacquer, a topical antifungal agent, is not very effective for adult onychomycosis, but investigators postulated that topical agents might succeed in children, who have thinner nail plates and faster nail growth.
In this double-blind study in 40 children (age range, 2–16 years) with culture-proven onychomycosis, 30 were randomized to ciclopirox 8% nail lacquer and 10 to vehicle. More than 80% of both groups had a family history of onychomycosis.
