E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that deliver nicotine to users in an aerosol (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Nov 10 2010). CDC investigators estimated use of these devices among middle- and high-school students on the basis of data from the 2011 and 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey.
Among middle-school students (grades 6–8), the percent who reporting ever using e-cigarettes increased from 1.4% in 2011 to 2.7% in 2012; current use increased from 0.6% to 1.1%. In 2012, 20.3% of ever-users reported never smoking conventional cigarettes and 61.1% reported concomitant use of both types of cigarettes.
