Although bone mineral density (BMD) is known to decrease in HIV-infected patients after antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation, the relative contributions of pre-ART immune deficiency, immune reconstitution, and ART medications to this effect remain poorly defined.
To explore this issue, investigators pooled data from three ACTG studies of ART in treatment-naive patients in which serial whole-body, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans were performed. The studies spanned successive periods in the combination ART era (enrollment in 1998–1999, 2003–2004, and 2005–2007) and included various ART regimens.
