Intimate partner violence (IPV) and nonpartner rape are worldwide problems affecting 1 in 3 women, with serious health consequences. Understanding factors associated with these acts could contribute to prevention and intervention.
In two linked United Nations–sponsored studies, 10,178 men (age range, 18–49) at nine sites in Bangladesh, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Papua New Guinea were interviewed in person, with the “most sensitive” questions self-administered. The percentage of ever-partnered men who had perpetrated physical and/or sexual IPV ranged from 25% to 80% depending on site.
