The most common causes of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) are Helicobacter pylori infection and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin. As the prevalence of H. pylori infection decreases in some developed countries, the number of PUD patients with neither obvious cause (i.e., idiopathic PUD) seems to be increasing.
To evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of idiopathic PUD, investigators prospectively collected data from patients with PUD in 32 French general hospitals during 1 year.
