Recent observational studies have suggested that chronic functional dyspepsia (e.g., epigastric discomfort, postprandial fullness) sometimes is triggered by acute gastroenteritis (NEJM JW Gen Med Aug 16 2005). Researchers examined this association in a systematic review and meta-analysis of nine studies (6 cohort and 3 case-control).
Gastroenteritis organisms were bacteria in four studies, viruses (norovirus) in one study, and unspecified in four studies. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 96 months; mean age ranged from 21 to 55.
