In a recent study, a two-drug regimen performed better than the standard three-drug one, but will the results influence clinical practice? See what Dr. Paul Sax thinks in his
HIV and ID Observations blog.
Compared with the standard three-drug regimen (2 NRTIs + lopinavir/r), lamivudine (3TC) + lopinavir/ritonavir had the same virologic outcomes but fewer side effects, according to results of the GARDEL study, presented last week at the European AIDS Clinical Society meeting. A two-drug regimen has never done better than a three-drug treatment in a fully powered study, Dr. Paul Sax points out in HIV and ID Observations. Despite the promising results, though, he says the study is more of a paradigm shifter than a game changer.
