Hyperoxia is associated with deleterious effects on cardiac output, peripheral vascular resistance, cerebrovascular blood flow, and lung function, and may potentiate brain injury. Researchers retrospectively analyzed a prospectively compiled database from 131 U.S. adult intensive care units (ICUs) to examine the effects of hyperoxia on mortality in ventilated stroke patients.
Of 2894 adult stroke ICU patients (49% intracranial hemorrhage [ICH], 32% subarachnoid hemorrhage, 19% acute ischemic stroke) with complete arterial blood gas data, 52% died in-hospital within 28 days.
