Studies from Bangladesh and Taiwan have shown associations between high arsenic levels (>100 μg/L) in drinking water and cardiovascular (CV) disease. To evaluate the association between long-term exposure to low to moderate arsenic levels (10–100 μg/L) in drinking water and CV disease, researchers used data on 3575 adults (age range, 45–74) living in Native American communities in Arizona, Oklahoma, and North and South Dakota. Combined inorganic and methylated arsenic species measured in baseline urine samples between 1989 and 1991 were used as a marker of long-term exposure; participants were followed through 2008.
