A 2012 Canadian study of ophthalmologic patients identified a strong association between current oral fluoroquinolone exposure and retinal detachment (JW Inf Dis Apr 11 2012). That observation was biologically plausible, given the known association between fluoroquinolone use and tendinopathy, but the study's findings on current use and recent use of fluoroquinolones were discordant. Now, in a confirmatory study using data from 1997 through 2011 on adults enrolled in nationwide healthcare and administrative registries in Denmark, researchers analyzed roughly 750,000 episodes of fluoroquinolone use (88% ciprofloxacin) and roughly 5.5 million matched control episodes of nonuse within the past 180 days.
