In a previous study, about three-fourths of patients with corticosteroid-dependent chronic idiopathic urticaria experienced symptom improvement after sulfasalazine treatment (Arch Dermatol 2006; 142:1337). Now, investigators have retrospectively reviewed the effectiveness of sulfasalazine for suppressing hives in 31 patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria treated between 2007 and 2012. All patients were receiving antihistamines. The initial daily sulfasalazine dose of 500 mg was increased by 500 mg daily each week, up to a target daily dose of 2000 mg or higher, depending upon response and weekly laboratory tests.
