HIV prevalence in some urban U.S. communities approaches that seen in some sub-Saharan African countries. In Newark, New Jersey, HIV prevalence is as high as 3.3% in populations with high frequencies of — and interactions between — injection-drug use and high-risk sexual behaviors. To estimate the potential effects of various interventions leading to virologic suppression on future HIV incidence and mortality, investigators constructed a mathematical model of the HIV epidemic in Newark during a 10-year period using epidemiologic surveillance data collected between 2002 and 2010.
