Women with thrombophilic disorders or histories of venous thromboembolism (VTE) have excess risk for thromboembolic events and other complications during pregnancy; furthermore, warfarin is teratogenic. Effective contraception is therefore indicated when such women want to prevent or delay pregnancy — but few options are available that do not interfere with critical hemostatic parameters. According to the World Health Organization's Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use, 2010 (WHO MEC), progestogen-only contraceptives and copper intrauterine devices are acceptable for such women, but little is known about effects of these contraceptives on bleeding patterns in women also using oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT).
