Only one type of contraceptive patch is now available in the U.S., but it delivers more ethinyl estradiol than low-dose contraceptive pills (OCs) and may be associated with increased risk for venous thromboembolism similar to that of newer combination OCs. Thus, a contraceptive patch containing levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol in amounts comparable to those in low-dose OCs represents an attractive option. In a manufacturer-supported, open-label, randomized trial involving 1504 participants, investigators evaluated the contraceptive efficacy and safety of a low-dose patch compared with an OC containing 100 µg of levonorgestrel and 20 µg of ethinyl estradiol.
