Pyogenic Liver Abscess Is Associated with Increased Risk for GI Cancers

In a large population-based study, gastric cancer was the only type of GI cancer that was not significantly increased in patients with PLA compared with controls.

Although pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) has been associated with development of some gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in several studies, the risks remain unclear. Now, investigators in Taiwan have conducted the first population-based study of this issue.

Using a nationwide health insurance claims database, researchers retrospectively assessed whether PLA was associated with increased risks for various GI cancers. Inpatient claims data were used to identify case patients with PLA diagnosed between 2000 and 2007 and four control patients per case matched by index year of PLA, sex, age, and history of diabetes.
