Although pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) has been associated with development of some gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in several studies, the risks remain unclear. Now, investigators in Taiwan have conducted the first population-based study of this issue.
Using a nationwide health insurance claims database, researchers retrospectively assessed whether PLA was associated with increased risks for various GI cancers. Inpatient claims data were used to identify case patients with PLA diagnosed between 2000 and 2007 and four control patients per case matched by index year of PLA, sex, age, and history of diabetes. The incidence of GI cancer was calculated using follow-up data through 2009.
