Although structural and functional hippocampal abnormalities have been reported in patients with schizophrenia for decades, how these relate to the extent and severity of patients' cognitive dysfunction has not been well studied. These investigators examined cognition and resting-state hippocampal activity on functional magnetic resonance imaging in 28 patients with schizophrenia, all of whom were medicated, and 28 healthy controls. All participants completed the extensive neuropsychological assessment, MATRICS (Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia) Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Patients were given standard tests of psychotic symptoms.
