Changes in the diagnostic criteria for all behavioral conditions are modified with each edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) based on empirical data and clinical experience. Recent research suggests that the DSM IV-TR subtypes (autism, pervasive developmental delay, and Asperger disorder) are not distinct conditions but rather disorders on a continuum varying in severity. In particular, differences in cognitive and communication abilities, neurophysiological measures, and outcomes in individuals with high-functioning autism and Asperger disorder are minimal.
