Between 2007 and 2011, an average of 416 cases of tuberculosis (TB) among U.S. children aged <5 years were reported annually, but the source of the exposure that resulted in infection was often unclear. Approximately two thirds of the U.S.-born children with TB have foreign-born parents; however, specific data on the countries of origin of these parents are lacking. In a recent cross-sectional, population-based study, investigators examined the rates of TB in children by places of birth of the children and the parents.
