In retrospective studies, longer withdrawal time is strongly associated with the detection of conventional adenomas. In preliminary studies, longer withdrawal time is also associated with improved detection of serrated polyps.
In the current study, investigators calculated detection of conventional adenomas and clinically significant serrated polyps (CSSPs) based on median endoscopist withdrawal time in normal examinations. Using data from the New Hampshire Colonoscopy Registry, they identified 7996 screening and surveillance colonoscopies performed by 42 endoscopists in 14 hospitals between 2009 and 2011. Clinically significant serrated polyps were defined as sessile serrated polyps and hyperplastic polyps proximal to the sigmoid.
