Researchers reviewed data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for children 5 to 19 years of age to evaluate the incidence of emergency department visits due to nonfatal intentional injuries occurring in the school setting from 2001 to 2008.
The annualized rate was 4.5 per 1000 students. The top five diagnoses were contusions/abrasions (40%), lacerations (16%), fractures (12%), traumatic brain injuries (10%), and strains/sprains (7%). These injuries were the result of an assault in 96% of cases, with 86% of perpetrators categorized as friends or acquaintances.
