For surgical treatment of tubal pregnancy, salpingostomy (preferred term for salpingotomy in the U.S.; removal of the pregnancy with preservation of the fallopian tube) has been considered preferable to salpingectomy (removal of the affected tube), but randomized trials have not directly compared these two approaches. In an international study, investigators randomized 446 women (mean age, 31) with laparoscopically confirmed tubal pregnancies (and normal-appearing contralateral tubes) to salpingostomy or salpingectomy.
Among women randomized to salpingostomy, 51 ultimately underwent salpingectomy (43 because of persistent tubal bleeding, 3 at reoperation for suspected tubal bleeding, 5 because of persistent trophoblastic tissue). Within 36 m…
