Structured outpatient physical therapy following hip fracture improves physical function and mobility, but functional deficits often persist. To assess the value of continuing rehabilitation with a less supervised program, researchers randomized 195 older adults (mean age, 78) who were within 20 months of hip fracture and had completed standard rehabilitation, but who had residual functional limitations, to a home exercise program or a control group that received nutrition education. Intervention patients received three 1-hour home visits plus monthly telephone calls from a physical therapist and were told to exercise three times weekly for 6 months with a focus on strength and balance.
