Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) is emerging as a noninvasive method of assessing activity in Crohn disease without the radiation exposure associated with computed tomography enterography. In the current prospective study, investigators evaluated its performance in identifying mucosal healing in Crohn disease, using colonoscopy as the reference standard.
Forty-eight patients with active Crohn disease and ulcers in at least one ileocolonic segment underwent ileocolonoscopy and MRE at baseline and 12 weeks after treatment with steroids or anti–tumor necrosis factor agents.
MRE identified ulcer healing with 90% accuracy and endoscopic remission with 83% accuracy. The performance of MRE was comparable to that of endoscopy.
