Adult survivors of childhood cancers are at risk for developing serious health conditions, mostly related to their original cancer treatments (NEJM JW Gen Med Jul 2 2013). To evaluate internists' attitudes and knowledge about caring for childhood cancer survivors, researchers surveyed 2000 U.S. general internists.
Of the 1110 internists who responded, 51% reported caring for at least one childhood cancer survivor in the preceding 5 years. Only 12% felt at least “somewhat familiar” with guidelines for monitoring childhood cancer survivors.
