The high rate of cure following induction chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy in patients with early- and advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) has focused attention on late complications.
To assess the frequency of treatment-related myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after HL therapy, investigators in the German Hodgkin Study Group (GHSG) retrospectively analyzed 11,952 HL patients (age range, 16–75) who were treated in 11 sequential GHSG clinical trials between 1993 and 2009.
During a median follow-up of 72 months, results were as follows:
106 patients (0.9%) were diagnosed with MDS or AML, of whom 12 had also received treatment for HL progression or relapse.
