Researchers performed a meta-analysis to better understand definitions, risk factors, and the incidence of post-intubation hemodynamic instability (PIHI). They identified 18 randomized trials and observational studies that included 6459 emergent, adult intubations outside of the operating room.
Most studies were single-center (89%) and included emergency department intubations (78%). The overall pooled incidence of PIHI was 110 cases per 1000 intubations (range, 10 to 440 cases per 1000). No association was observed between PIHI and geographic location of the study, intubation setting, intubator experience, intubation medications, or definition of hemodynamic instability.
