Although the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine (PPV23) is recommended for high-risk and older adults, its efficacy in preventing community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains controversial. To determine the clinical benefits of PPV23 use, researchers performed a closed population–based prospective cohort study in Catalonia, Spain, where vaccination with PPV23 has been recommended since 2002 for people aged ≥60.
A total of 27,204 individuals aged ≥60 were followed from December 2008 through November 2011. The primary outcomes were hospitalization for CAP (pneumococcal or all-cause) and death from any cause.
