Antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation very early after HIV acquisition aims to decrease the size of the viral reservoir, possibly improving the clinical course and the odds of a functional cure. Studies of this strategy to date have yielded mixed results. Now, to explore predictors of virologic response in early initiators, researchers in California have conducted a 24-week observational study in which HIV-positive patients who started ART within 6 months of their estimated time of infection provided blood and gut specimens for analysis.
