Factors Influencing Response to ART Started After Recent HIV Acquisition

Older age and a marker of gut microbial translocation were independently associated with persistent viremia after early antiretroviral therapy initiation.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation very early after HIV acquisition aims to decrease the size of the viral reservoir, possibly improving the clinical course and the odds of a functional cure. Studies of this strategy to date have yielded mixed results. Now, to explore predictors of virologic response in early initiators, researchers in California have conducted a 24-week observational study in which HIV-positive patients who started ART within 6 months of their estimated time of infection provided blood and gut specimens for analysis.
