Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, is endemic in many tropical countries. Over the past 50 years, its incidence has risen 30-fold; an estimated 50 million to 100 million cases now occur each year worldwide. Travelers to tropical countries are at high risk for acquiring the disease, but how much does the risk differ among destinations?
To estimate the dengue attack rate among Swedish travelers to dengue-endemic countries, researchers examined data on confirmed cases reported to the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control for 1995 to 2010, and on the numbers of Swedish visitor arrivals in such countries during that period, published by the United Nations World Tourist Organization.
