Postpartum hemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, but obstetric providers often make inaccurate estimates of maternal blood loss (EBL). Visual aids might improve accuracy. U.S. investigators studied the effect on EBL accuracy of a pocket card with pictures of specified amounts of artificial blood on common obstetric materials. A total of 151 maternity-care providers (nurses, midwives, obstetric residents, attending physicians, and medical students; median years of experience, 8) evaluated six images of measured amounts of artificial blood on various items typically used during delivery (e.g., sponges, Chux pads, peri pads, delivery drape).
