Tuberculosis (TB) remains a heavy burden in many areas of the world, particularly those with high rates of HIV infection. In children, the disease is often diagnosed solely on clinical grounds. The signs and symptoms of childhood TB are similar to those of several other conditions, however, and misdiagnosis commonly occurs, leading to delays in administering appropriate therapy and the unnecessary use of antimicrobials. Diagnostic advances are sorely needed, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where TB is a major public health problem.
