Choosing between currently available preferred antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens often involves issues pertaining to tolerability and long-term effects on metabolic parameters. A recent industry-supported analysis focused on fasting lipid levels (n=1368 patients) and fat distribution (n=413) among participants in the ECHO and THRIVE trials at 96 weeks. These ART-naive patients were receiving either rilpivirine or efavirenz, each plus two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (tenofovir and emtricitabine in ECHO; a choice of dual NRTI regimens in THRIVE; NEJM JW AIDS Clin Care Aug 1 2011).
